About Gujrati Shoes Maker – Art & Craft in Bhilwara
Our workshop for Gujrati Shoes Maker is located on Session Court Road. It’s the same street where all the lawyers and people going to court hang out, so there is always something happening outside. We spend our days surrounded by the smell of leather and various types of rubber soles. It’s a small place, and you have to watch your step because there are often shoes waiting to be fixed scattered on the floor. We’ve got a couple of old sewing machines that make a lot of noise, but they still work better than the new ones we’ve seen. My hands are usually stained with polish or dye by the end of the day. We don't really have a set schedule; we just start when we get here and leave when the work is done. Some people come in for a quick fix while they wait for their court hearing to start. We’ve seen all sorts of footwear come through these doors, from expensive boots to sandals that are barely holding together. It’s a humble way to make a living, but we take pride in seeing a shoe leave here looking much better than when it came in. The street can be quite loud with the traffic and people arguing, but inside we just focus on the stitching and the glue. It’s a steady rhythm that we’ve grown to love over the years. We just keep our tools sharp and our heads down and get on with the day's tasks until it is time to go home.
