If you look for shop number one near the Ram Mantra Temple, you’ll see our place. We can hear the bells from the temple every morning and evening, which is a nice way to mark the time. The air around here often smells like flowers and incense from the stalls outside the temple gates. Our shop is quite narrow, so we have shelves going all the way up to the ceiling. We have to use a long stick with a hook to get some of the boxes down. It is a bit of an old-fashioned way of doing things, but it works for us. The floor is covered in green linoleum that has seen better days. We spend a lot of time wiping the glass jars and making sure the labels are facing forward. It gets very busy on festival days because there are so many people in the area. We usually have a bottle of water tucked under the counter because it gets quite warm in here with the door open. We don’t really do much advertising; people just see the sign when they are heading to the temple. It is a quiet existence for the most part, except for the temple music. We just keep the shelves stocked with whatever the locals might need and try to keep things tidy enough so we can find things quickly. The lights flicker a bit sometimes but they stay on.
