We set up our office at Ajay Sah’s place over in Kalgiganjtola. It’s right in the middle of Shyam Pur, so it’s pretty easy for anyone in the panchayat area to drop by. The building is simple, just like the rest of the neighborhood here. We don’t have fancy computers or a cooling system; we mostly just rely on the breeze and a few hand-drawn ledgers. You can usually find one of us sitting out front in the mornings when the air is still fresh and cool. People walk by on their way to the fields and stop to ask how things are going with the gramin fund. It’s a lot of manual work, writing everything down by hand and making sure the numbers add up at the end of every single day. The floor is made of stone and it stays cool, which is nice when the sun gets high in the sky. We don't really do much advertising because everyone knows Ajay and they know we’re here. It’s a very local thing. VIKRAMSHILA GRAMIN NIDHI LIMITED is basically just a few desks and a bunch of files in a room where the neighbors feel comfortable walking in without knocking. Sometimes we stay late when there’s a lot of paperwork to catch up on, but we don’t mind the quiet. It gives us time to double-check the figures without any distractions from the street. It’s just a basic operation for the local people who live around here.
