Our foundry is located at 36B in the Shimoga Bhadravathi Industrial Area. It’s out in Machenahalli, near the Nidige Post. Being in an industrial zone means we are surrounded by other factories and warehouses. It’s a dusty place, and the heat from the furnaces is intense, especially in the summer months. Shanthala Ductile & Grey Iron Foundary is where we spend most of our waking hours. We work with molten iron, pouring it into molds to make all sorts of heavy parts. It’s heavy, physical work that leaves you tired at the end of the shift. We have a big yard where the raw materials are kept, and there is always a truck being loaded or unloaded. The office is just a small room off to the side where we keep the books and take our breaks. We don't have fancy furniture, just some old chairs and a table where we drink our tea. The sound of the machinery is constant, a low thrum that you stop noticing after a while. We have a lot of local workers from the surrounding villages who have been with us for a long time. They know the rhythm of the pours better than anyone. It’s not a glamorous job, but we take pride in making sure the iron is right. Every day is pretty much the same: heat, metal, and hard work. It is what we know how to do best here.
