We've been here at Dodda Mavalli for a long time now. The shop is on the first floor, right at number 51, and sometimes it's a bit of a climb if you're carrying heavy parts. Lalbagh Fort Road is always noisy, but you get used to the sound of traffic and engines after a while. Most days, we’re just covered in grease and oil because diesel engines are messy things to work on. It’s not fancy work. My father started this and now we just keep it going, fixing what comes through the door. Some days the tea guy comes by twice, and those are the good days when the work moves fast. We see all kinds of trucks and machines. People come in from all over the neighborhood because they know we’ve been in this spot for years. The floor is stained with oil from decades of spills, and no matter how much we scrub, it stays that way. We have some old tools that still work better than the new ones we bought last year. It’s a bit cramped inside with all the spare parts lying around on the shelves and the floor. You have to watch your step when you walk in. We don't have a big sign or anything, just the work we do every day. It’s just us here from morning until the sun goes down and the traffic on Lalbagh Fort Road finally starts to thin out a bit.
