Kamakshipalya is a busy hub for this kind of thing. Our place, Sunrise Garment Machinery, sits at 928/929, B-79, on the 4th Main Cross. It’s right near Magadi Road, so there’s always noise. The building is a bit older, and the stairs are steep and narrow. We have all kinds of garment machines sitting around, some new and some being worked on for repairs. There’s a lot of metal clanking and the smell of machine oil everywhere. People come in looking for parts or wanting someone to take a look at a broken stitcher. We don’t have a fancy showroom. It’s more like a giant garage where things get fixed. The walls are a dull color and there are calendars from years ago still hanging up on the nails. We have a small desk where the phone rings constantly, usually someone from a factory nearby needing a spare part urgently. It’s a lot of standing and bending over heavy machines. The Cauverypura area is crowded, so lunch is usually a quick bite from a nearby stall or a tiffin box. We don’t really do big meetings. We just talk over the machines or while standing in the hallway near the entrance. It’s a working man’s place, nothing more, nothing less. By the end of the day, our clothes smell like oil and the floor is covered in tiny metal shavings and dust.
