We are located at 18 Chickpet, which is one of the busiest parts of the city you could find yourself in. The lanes are narrow and always full of people carrying bundles of cloth or pushing carts through the crowds. Our building is an old one, like most of the structures in this neighborhood. It has those steep stairs and small rooms that keep you close to your coworkers. We don’t have much in the way of modern office furniture; mostly just the old wooden desks and cabinets that have been here for decades. There’s a certain smell to Chickpet—a mix of old paper, textiles, and street food—and it drifts into our office every time the door opens. We keep a ledger on the main desk and there’s usually a pot of tea sitting somewhere nearby. It’s a very traditional way of doing business, where people still prefer to talk face to face rather than sending an email. The noise from the street never really stops until very late at night. We’ve grown accustomed to the shouting of vendors and the constant movement outside. Our team is small and we’ve all known each other for years, so it feels more like a family than a company. We just keep our heads down and handle the accounts and the paperwork as it comes in. It is a noisy and cramped place, but it’s just a normal way to spend the day.
