Penguins

We’re located at 16 Main Road, right on Kumara Krupa Road. It’s a pretty easy place to find if you’re in the area. The name of the shop is Penguins, which people sometimes find a bit funny, but the name just stuck after a while. We’ve been here for a good number of years now. The building is an older one, but it has a lot of character that you don't see in newer places. Inside, we keep things pretty simple. It’s mostly shelves and counters filled with whatever we’re stocking that week. We don't have a big corporate manual or anything like that. We just learn things as we go. Some days are much busier than others, especially when the weather is nice and people are out walking on Kumara Krupa Road. We spend a lot of time just talking to the regulars who stop by to see what’s new in the shop. It’s a friendly atmosphere, nothing too stiff or formal. We don't really use a lot of fancy technology; we still write some things down by hand in a notebook. Our staff is small, so we all end up doing a bit of everything, from sweeping the floor to checking the inventory lists. It’s a local business through and through. We aren't trying to expand into some giant chain of stores. We’re just happy being where we are and doing what we do every day. It’s a steady rhythm that suits us.
