Our shop is over in Cholarapalya, right near the Aqsa Masjid. It is a lively part of town, and you can usually hear the sounds of the neighborhood all day long. We have been working with silk for a long time. It is a family trade that has been passed down through the years. Inside the shop, it is mostly just rolls of fabric piled up on the counters and tucked into the corners. We do not have those bright, fancy lights like the big malls. We prefer the natural light coming through the front window so people can see the real colors of the silk before they buy. Sometimes the edges of the fabric get a little frayed on the rolls, but that is just how it is when you are moving things around every day. We spend a lot of time measuring and cutting for customers who come in looking for something for a wedding or a special festival. My daughter helps out with the accounts, though she mostly likes talking to the customers more than doing the math. We have a small bench outside where we sit when it is not too hot. People stop by just to say hello even if they are not buying anything that day. It is a tight space, but we make it work. We try to keep the shop clean, but with all the threads and lint, it is a constant battle.
