Jamal Gear Machinery Ltd is out in the Sadaramangala Industrial Area on Whitefield Road. Being at 17 B, we are right in the thick of the manufacturing zone. The sound of metal hitting metal and the low rumble of heavy machinery is the background noise of our lives here. We work with gears, so everything is usually a bit oily. You can’t really avoid getting grease on your hands or your clothes when you’re walking around the floor. Our office section is just a small partitioned area at the front of the shed. It’s got a few old computers and a lot of technical drawings spread out on the tables. The Whitefield traffic has gotten much worse over the years, so getting to work is more of a struggle than it used to be. Inside the gates, though, things move at their own pace. We spend a lot of time calibrating the machines and checking the teeth on the gears we produce. It’s precise work that requires a lot of patience. We have a small crew of mechanics and operators who have been with us through thick and thin. We eat our lunch together in the small break area near the back. There isn’t anything fancy about our setup; it’s just a place built for heavy work and engineering. We focus on the metal and the machinery every day. We usually have to shout over the sound of the metal cutting, but we’ve all gotten used to it.
