Institue For Apparel Making Technology

We are located on the second floor at No. 22/5 on Gangadhara Chetty Road. The Institue For Apparel Making Technology isn't quite as grand as that long name might make it sound to some people. It is mostly just a large, open room filled with various sewing machines, heavy cutting tables, and stacks of fabric scraps in the corners. You can hear the rhythmic clicking of the needles all the way from the stairwell before you even reach our front door. We spend our days showing people how to put together garments and how to understand different patterns. It is a very hands-on kind of place. The white chalk dust from the marking pencils seems to get everywhere, and there is always stray thread stuck to the floor. We don't have fancy air conditioning, just some big windows that stay open to let the breeze in from the street below. Sometimes the older machines break down and we have to spend the whole afternoon fixing them ourselves. It is a practical environment for learning. We have students coming in at all different times, so it is rarely ever quiet in here. The 2nd floor location is nice because it gets a good amount of natural light during the day, but carrying rolls of heavy cloth up those stairs is a real workout for us. We don't do any big advertising; people just hear about us and show up.
