G N V Rangaiah & Co is right at number 1 on Ashram Road in the Chickpet area. If you’ve ever been to Chickpet, you know it’s a maze of narrow streets and constant activity. We’ve been a part of this community for a long time. Our building is old and doesn't have any of those modern glass windows. It’s a solid place filled with all kinds of stock piled up to the ceiling. We spend our days dealing with suppliers and customers, mostly talking about prices and delivery times. It’s the kind of business where a lot of deals are still done with a handshake and a cup of tea. We don't have air conditioning, so we just leave the doors open to catch whatever breeze comes off the street. It gets noisy with all the carts and people passing by, but we don't even notice it anymore. We aren't looking to become a famous brand or anything like that. We just want to keep the business running smoothly like it has for years. Our desks are covered in papers and old calculators. We know our regulars by their first names and they know where to find us. It’s a lot of manual work, moving boxes and checking lists, but it’s what we are good at. We just keep things moving and try to stay organized in the middle of all the chaos. It is a long day but we enjoy the rhythm of the market.
