We are based in Jayanagar, tucked away in one of those leafy lanes the neighborhood is known for. Our shop is mostly filled with big bolts of fabric for curtains and sofas. It’s a quiet place for the most part, except for the sound of the measuring tape snapping back or the heavy scissors cutting through thick cotton. We don’t have any flashy signs or big advertisements. Most people find us because they live nearby or someone told them about us. The shop smells like fresh cloth and a bit of floor cleaner. We spend our days helping people figure out how many meters they need for their windows, which involves a lot of sketching on scrap paper. The shelves are packed tight, and sometimes it’s a struggle to pull out a heavy roll from the bottom of the stack. We have a few old wooden chairs for customers to sit on while they look through the swatches. The staff here doesn’t wear uniforms, just regular clothes, and we tend to know our regulars by name. Jayanagar is a nice place to work because of the trees, though the monkeys sometimes cause trouble on the roof. We just stay focused on the textures and the patterns. It’s a slow-paced kind of business, and we like it that way because you can’t rush choosing the right fabric. We usually close up early on Sundays to spend time with our families.
