Our yard is out at No.128 in Mandur Village, right along the International Airport Road. If you’ve driven out toward the airport, you’ve probably passed by without noticing us among all the construction and open land. We build portable cabins, so our space is mostly outdoors with a lot of steel, welding gear, and half-finished containers sitting around. It gets pretty dusty out here, especially when the wind picks up off the main road. The sun can be brutal during the middle of the day, but that’s when we get most of the heavy work done. We are a small group of guys who know how to handle tools and move heavy materials. It’s a bit of a trek for some to get out to Mandur, but being near the airport road is useful for moving the cabins out on trucks. We don’t have a fancy lobby or air-conditioned offices. Usually, we’re just sitting on plastic chairs under a fan when we need a break. We’ve been doing this for a while, making these metal boxes for sites all over Bangalore and beyond. It’s noisy work with all the grinding and hammering, but there’s a certain satisfaction in seeing a cabin loaded onto a trailer and driven away. We just focus on the building part and leave the fancy talk to other people. The trucks coming in and out keep us on our toes all day long.
