If you know Avenue Road, you know how crowded it can get. We are right there at number 145 in Sampangiram Nagar. Our shop is packed from floor to ceiling with all sorts of stationery. We have got pens, pencils, registers, and piles of paper that seem to never end. It is a bit of a squeeze when there are more than three people in the aisle, but we have managed like this for years. The building is old, and the wooden shelves have a bit of a lean to them from all the weight they carry. We do not really use a computer for everything; we still have the big old accounts books that we update by hand. It feels more real that way. Every morning, we sweep the front step and try to organize the displays, but by noon, things usually get a bit jumbled again as customers look through the stacks. We get everyone from school kids looking for a cheap eraser to office clerks buying bulk registers for their companies. It is a noisy spot with all the traffic and horns outside, but you get used to it. We do not have any air conditioning, just a couple of old ceiling fans that hum all day. We like the bustle of Avenue Road. It is where the heart of the city’s trade is, and we are just happy to be a small part of it.
