Vijaya Laxmi Home Appliances has been sitting on this same stretch in Kampli for a while now, and the routine hasn't changed much over the years. You walk in and there’s that smell of new plastic and metal from all the boxes of mixers, irons, and fans stacked up against the walls. We don't have those fancy displays or the bright, blinking lights you see in the big city malls. It’s mostly just shelves filled with things people actually need for their kitchens or to keep their rooms cool when the heat gets bad in the afternoon. Sometimes the delivery truck comes a bit late and we have to move everything around to make space, which is always a bit of a headache when it's hot. The floor needs a good sweep every few hours because the dust from the road just drifts right in through the open front. We spend a lot of our time checking the inventory or just talking to the neighbors who stop by for a minute to escape the sun. It’s not a quiet place, but it isn't too loud either, just the normal sounds of the town outside. Most days are just about making sure the stock is right and the lights stay on. We keep a small kettle in the back for tea because the days can get long when things are slow. It is just a regular spot where we do our work.
