Out here at Plot No. 134 in Udyambag, things stay pretty busy from Monday to Saturday. Margale Foundries is basically just a big shed with a lot of heavy equipment and some very dedicated people. The air in Udyambag always smells a bit like iron and smoke, which is something you stop noticing after your first month on the job. Our plot isn't the biggest on the block, but we fit everything we need inside the fence. We spend a lot of time just moving things from one side of the floor to the other. There’s a specific way the sun hits the workshop floor in the late afternoon, right through the high windows, and that’s usually when we start thinking about wrapping up for the day. We have a small table near the back where we keep the water cooler, and that's usually where most of the talking happens between shifts. It’s not a corporate environment by any stretch of the imagination. We wear boots that are usually covered in some kind of grit, and the walls have some old calendars hanging on them that haven't been flipped in months. Plot No. 134 is just a place where we do the work we know how to do. We don't really bother with much else besides making sure the daily output is handled and the gates are locked tight before we head home for the night. It's a steady life in a busy part of town.
