Rk Kiran Store

Our shop, Rk Kiran Store, is located at 14-25 on Sankeshwar Road here in Ghatprabha. It’s not a huge place, but we try to keep a bit of everything on the shelves so people don't have to go all the way into the main town center for small things. The morning starts with us sweeping the front step and getting the daily items laid out. Sankeshwar Road gets quite a bit of traffic, mostly tractors and motorcycles, so there is always a layer of dust on the counter by lunchtime. We spend a lot of time weighing out grains and pulses into smaller bags. It can be tedious work, but it’s part of the job. Sometimes the rains are heavy and we have to move everything back from the door so it doesn't get wet. We’ve got some old wooden counters that have been here since the beginning, and they show their age with scratches and marks. The neighbors often stop by just to chat for a minute even if they aren't buying anything, which is nice. We keep a ledger for the regulars, and sometimes the math takes a while to get right at the end of the month. It’s just a normal neighborhood store where we know everyone’s business and they know ours. We don’t have fancy lights or signs, just the stock and a couple of fans to keep the air moving. It is just a quiet way to make a living.
