Satluj Rice Mills

Satluj Rice Mills has been part of Village and Post Mehraj for a long time. If you live around here, you probably pass by us every day. The mill sits on a good piece of land where we have enough room for the trucks to turn around without making too much of a mess. In the winter, the mist hangs low over the rice stacks and it looks quite nice, though it’s freezing cold when we start the shift. We have a few dogs that hang around the gate, and they mostly just sleep in the shade when the sun is out. The main work happens in the big shed where the noise is constant. You have to shout to be heard over the separators. We don’t have a big corporate office or anything like that. It is just a desk in the corner with some ledgers and a telephone that rings more than it should. People from the village stop by to chat or see how the harvest is looking. Mehraj is a tight community, and the mill is a central spot for many of the local farmers. We do our job, handle the grain, and try to keep the machinery from breaking down at the wrong time. It is honest work and there is always something that needs fixing or cleaning. That is just how life goes here at the mill.
