Pepsu Rice Mills

Down here on Bega Road in Bhucho Mandi, things stay pretty noisy. Pepsu Rice Mills is where we spend most of our waking hours. It’s a busy area, especially when the season kicks in and the mandi is full of activity. You can hear the hum of the motors from the street. We’ve got a couple of big sheds and the yard is usually packed with bags waiting to be moved. It’s not a quiet job, that’s for sure. My boots are always covered in husk by the time I get home. We try to keep things organized, but when fifty trucks show up at once, it gets a bit chaotic. That is just the way it is in Bhucho Mandi. The sun beats down on the corrugated metal roofs in the summer, making it like an oven inside. We drink a lot of tea and just keep moving the grain through. It’s been this way for as long as I can remember. Sometimes the conveyor belt snaps and we have to spend half a day fixing it while the drivers grumble. It’s honest work though. We aren’t trying to impress anyone with a shiny office. The focus is on the rice and getting it out the door. If you are looking for us, just head down Bega Road, you can’t really miss the sign or the smell of toasted grain in the air. We are just local people running a mill, nothing more and nothing less than that.
