Jai Jwala Rice & General Mills

Down here in Rampura Phul, life revolves a lot around the crops. Our mill is one of those places where you can always hear the heavy machinery working from down the street. We deal with rice and other general milling stuff, mostly whatever the local farmers are bringing in during the season. It gets really hectic when the harvest arrives. The yard gets filled with piles of grain, and we are working late into the night just to keep up with the intake. The air is always thick with that specific smell of dry husks. We don't have any polished showrooms or fancy reception areas. It’s a working mill, so there are sacks stacked up to the ceiling and spare parts lying around on the workbenches. Most of the talk around here is about the rain or the price of diesel for the generators. We have a few old tractors that we use for moving stuff around the site. The walls are covered in a layer of fine dust that never really goes away, no matter how much we sweep. It is a bit of a rough environment, but it’s what we know. We drink a lot of tea and talk to the drivers while they wait for their loads. It’s a straightforward way to make a living, even if it’s exhausting when the season is at its peak. We just keep the rollers turning.
