Hanuman Rice Mill

Located on Butta Singh Wala Road the mill is easy to find if you know the area. The road is often busy with trucks and tractors carrying crops. We have a big open area in front where the paddy is spread out sometimes. The buildings are built of brick and have seen many seasons. Inside it is mostly the big machines and the conveyors moving the grain along. There is a specific smell to a rice mill that stays with you even after you go home. It’s a mix of dry husks and warm metal. We spend a lot of our time making sure the belts are running right and the rollers are clean. There is a small shack where we keep the tools and some spare parts. It’s a regular routine here. We start when the light comes up and keep going until the work is done for the day. My cousin helps me with the accounts and the paperwork in the evenings. We don't have a lot of visitors who aren't farmers or drivers. The sun hits the side of the main building in the afternoon and makes the whole place feel very hot. We have a hand pump for water in the back that stays cold no matter what. It’s just a place of work where we try to keep things organized. The seasons dictate how busy we are and we just follow the rhythm of the harvest.
