If you find yourself at Kanchian Chowk in Raman Mandi, you’ll likely see our sign. Garg Maruti Parts is tucked away right near Hospital Road. It’s a noisy corner with all the ambulances and rickshaws going by, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. We mostly deal with parts for Maruti cars because that’s what everyone around here drives. The shop is filled from floor to ceiling with boxes. Sometimes it takes me a minute to find a specific filter or a cable if it’s buried in the back. My hands are usually stained with oil by ten in the morning. People come in with broken bits of their cars, asking if we have a replacement. Sometimes they stay for a chat about the weather or the state of the roads. Raman Mandi is a small enough place where you know most of your regulars by name. My father started this place, and I just took over when he got too tired to deal with the traffic every day. We don’t have a computer system for the stock; I just know where everything is by memory. It’s a bit old-fashioned, but it works for us. When the sun goes down, the lights from the hospital across the way stay bright, but we usually close up and head home once it gets quiet. It’s a steady life, selling spare parts and making sure the local cars keep running. We don’t try to be anything we’re not.
