Siri Ganesh Rice & Oil Mills is located at Khasra No. 62 in the Gehri Mandi area of Jandiala Guru. Being in the mandi means things are always moving. There is a specific smell of pressed oil that hangs in the air around here. It’s a strong scent, but you stop noticing it after a few days of working. The mill handles both rice and oil, so there is always something different to do depending on the season. We have the heavy presses for the oil and the hullers for the rice. It’s a lot of metal and noise. Jandiala Guru is a place where people know about farming and milling, so we fit right in. The space at Khasra 62 is mostly taken up by the equipment and the bags of raw material waiting to be processed. We spend a lot of time checking the machines and making sure the oil is flowing right. It’s a messy business sometimes, especially with the oil, but we have a routine that works for us. The local farmers bring their crops in, and we get to work. We don't have a polished front office. It's just a place of work where things get done. The sun hits the courtyard hard in the afternoons, so we usually take our main break then. It’s a steady life and we’ve been part of this mandi landscape for a good while, watching the seasons change and the crops come through.
