Amar Rice & General Mills

Amar Rice & General Mills is located right on Nabha Road in the Sangrur district. It’s a wide road, which is good for the big trucks that come by to pick up our rice. The mill itself is a big building with high ceilings and a lot of metal ducting running around. We’ve got the typical setup you’d expect for a place like this in Punjab. Most of our days are spent monitoring the dryers and the hullers. It can get pretty hot inside during the peak of summer, but we just keep the doors open to catch whatever breeze we can. We’ve lived and worked in Sangrur for a long time, so we’ve seen the seasons come and go. The rhythm of the work follows the farmers' schedules. When they are busy, we are busy. There’s a lot of sweeping to do because the rice dust gets everywhere, no matter how much you try to contain it. We aren't trying to be the biggest or most modern place around. We just want to keep the mill running smoothly so we can do our jobs. The office is just a small room with a couple of chairs and a desk covered in papers and sample bags. It’s a very hands-on job, and we usually go home tired at the end of the shift. That’s just the nature of the work on Nabha Road.
