Kamla Saree Arts is located right in the heart of Bara Bazaar. If you know where Deepak Sweets is, we are just a few steps away from there. The smell of frying sweets usually drifts into our shop in the afternoons, which makes us all hungry. It’s a very traditional kind of place. We have stacks and stacks of sarees reaching all the way to the ceiling. Bara Bazaar is always crowded and dusty, but that’s just how it is. We’ve been here for a long time, so the floorboards are a bit worn down in places. We don't have a fancy window display with mannequins. Instead, we just show people the sarees by unfolding them on the counter. It takes a lot of time to fold them back up properly, but it’s what we do all day. There isn't any air conditioning, just a few old ceiling fans that buzz while they spin. People come here because they know we have been around since their parents were young. We don't bother with fancy bags or stickers. We just wrap the sarees in plain paper and send people on their way. It’s a simple shop with a lot of history in the walls. Sometimes it gets so busy you can hardly move between the shelves. We drink a lot of tea to keep going during the wedding season when everyone is looking for something specific. It’s just a local bazaar life for us, and we are used to the noise and the crowds.
