Bomkesh Cold Storage is situated in Malpur village, over in the Kotulpur area. Aloke Singha is the person in charge here. We are quite close to Joyrambati, which is a well-known spot in Bankura. The building stands out because it’s one of the larger structures around these parts. We mostly store vegetables and crops for the local people who live and farm in the surrounding villages. The temperature inside is kept low to make sure nothing rots, which is a constant job given how hot it gets in this part of West Bengal. We have a lot of heavy doors and thick walls to keep the cold in. Every day, we see tractors and small vans pulling up at the entrance. The floor is usually covered in a bit of mud or straw from the fields. We don’t use any complicated systems, just regular cooling units and a lot of manual checking. Our team is just a few guys from Malpur and nearby who know how to handle the heavy bags. It’s a steady kind of work, tied closely to the seasons of the year. When it’s time to take the goods out, the place gets really loud and busy. We don't spend money on advertising because the farmers already know where we are. We just focus on keeping the machines running so the food stays good. It’s a basic, honest way to make a living in the countryside without trying to be something we are not.
