If you have ever been to Avenue Road in Bangalore, you know how packed it gets with people and shops. We are right in the middle of that, specifically in Kalpana Market on Basavanna Lane. Our spot is at 4/5, and it’s a typical busy market space. We deal in silks, which means our shop is always full of colors and different textures. It’s a tight squeeze sometimes because we try to keep a lot of variety on hand for the customers who walk through the doors. The lane outside is narrow, so you really have to watch where you are walking. We have been part of this market for years, and we’ve seen it change quite a bit, though it’s always stayed busy. Inside, it’s mostly just shelves stacked high with fabric. There isn't much room for anything else. We spend our time unfolding cloth for people to see and then folding it all back up again. It’s a lot of physical work, standing on your feet most of the day. The noise from the street carries inside, so it never feels truly quiet. We don't have a big fancy storefront with lights, just the sign and the silk. It’s a traditional way of doing business in a part of the city that has always been about trade. We just handle the fabric and talk to the regulars who come by for their silk.
