Shalimar Tanning Company is located over at No.5, Naval Hospital Road. If you know the Periamet area, you know it’s a place where a lot of leather work happens. We've been operating out of this building for a while now. The air around here always smells a bit like hides and the stuff we use to treat them. It’s a messy job, honestly. We spend most of our days dealing with raw materials and turning them into something people can actually use for shoes or bags. Our space isn't huge, but we make it work. The floors are usually wet and there’s always someone moving bundles around. It’s hard work on the hands and back, but we’re used to it. We don’t really do much advertising because most of our customers have known us for years. They just come by the shop on Naval Hospital Road when they need a batch of leather processed. Sometimes the supplies arrive late, or the weather makes the drying process take longer than we want. That’s just part of the tanning business. We keep our tools sharp and our drums rotating. There’s no big corporate structure here, just a few of us making sure the quality is decent enough for the market. It’s a traditional way of working that hasn't changed much since we started. Most days we’re just covered in dust or dye, trying to get the orders finished before the sun goes down.
