Sanjali Centre For Odissi Dance

We've been running the Sanjali Centre For Odissi Dance over here in Indira Nagar for a while now. The studio gets pretty busy in the evenings when the students start arriving for their sessions. Odissi isn't something you just learn in a weekend, so we spend a lot of time on the basics. Sometimes the floor gets a bit scuffed up and the music is playing on a loop, but that's just how it goes. We aren't a big fancy academy with glass walls. It's mostly just a hall where we practice the steps and try to get the rhythm right. You can hear the ghungroos from the street sometimes if the windows are open. People come by after work or school, drop their bags in the corner, and start stretching. It gets hot in the summer months but we keep the fans going. There's usually someone sitting near the door waiting for their turn or just watching. We keep track of the classes on a messy whiteboard near the entrance. Most of the people here live nearby, so it’s a lot of familiar faces every week. It’s a bit of a climb up the stairs to get to us, but everyone manages fine. We don't really do big advertisements or anything like that. Usually, someone just hears about us from a neighbor and walks in to ask about the timings. It’s just a place to learn dance without too much fuss and to put in the hard work required every day.
