S H Hardware is right in the middle of the action at No. 23/2 in the Maharaja Building on S P Road. If you’ve ever been to S P Road, you know it’s one of the busiest streets in Bangalore. Our shop is small and packed from floor to ceiling with all sorts of hardware items. We have drawers and bins full of screws, bolts, and tools, and half the time we’re using a ladder to reach things for customers. It gets very hot in the afternoons, and the shop can feel a bit cramped when there are more than three people inside. We don't have a computer system to track every little washer; we just know our stock by heart. The floor is concrete and has seen better days, and the counter is scratched up from years of sliding metal parts across it. We spend the day talking to electricians, plumbers, and DIY folks who are looking for very specific parts. There’s always a lot of haggling and noise from the street right outside our door. Sometimes we have to run out to the curb to help someone load a heavy bag of tools into their rickshaw. It’s a fast-paced environment where you’re always on your feet. We don’t have time for a lot of extras; we just focus on finding the right piece of hardware in the pile so the customer can get back to their work.
