Silk Touch

We are up on the second floor of the Krishna building, number 64. It is on Sanjeevappa Lane, which is right off the Avenue Road Cross. If you know that intersection, you know how busy it gets every day. There are people and carts everywhere, and the noise never really stops from dawn until dusk. To get to us, you have to find the entrance and head up the stairs. It is a bit of a trek, especially if you are carrying anything heavy. The second floor is quieter than the street, but you still hear the city down below. We deal mostly in silks, so the rooms are filled with the sound of fabric sliding and being folded on the tables. We do not have a fancy showroom. It is more like a warehouse where we also meet people. The shelves are packed tight, and sometimes you have to move three things just to find the one you want. The light comes in from a few small windows, so we use overhead tubes to see the colors clearly. We have been in this spot on Avenue Road for quite some time now. We know the rhythm of the market, when it gets busy and when it is time to close up the shutters for the night. It is hard work, especially with the heat in the summer months, but we have gotten used to it. We just keep our heads down and focus on moving the stock.
