It is usually pretty quiet on P.T. Street in Basungudi when we first get in to open up. Most mornings start with just the sound of the shutters going up and someone putting on a pot of coffee in the back room before the first person arrives. We have been at this spot for a while now and most of the folks who walk through the door are from just a few blocks away. You get to know the faces and their families. Sometimes people just pop their heads in to ask for directions or see if we have seen a neighbor walking by. The office isn't anything fancy, just some chairs and the usual equipment we use every day to check people’s vision. We spend a lot of time cleaning lenses and making sure the paper files are in the right place, though they rarely stay organized for long. It gets a bit busy around mid-morning when the sun is higher and people are out doing their daily errands. We do not really do much talking about big goals or fancy vision statements. We just show up, look at eyes, and try to make sure everyone leaves with the right prescription or some decent advice. It is just what we do to get through the day. The walls could probably use a new coat of paint, but it feels like home to the staff. Usually, by five or six, we start winding down and locking up the cabinets.
