Kashmir Minerals is based at Plot No.90 in the Industrial Estate in Chatipora, Handwara. It’s a rugged sort of place to work, especially when the weather turns cold and the wind comes off the mountains. Our yard is usually full of raw minerals and the heavy equipment we need to move them around. We don’t have a fancy office with plush carpets. Instead, we have a sturdy building where we keep our tools and where we can escape the rain for a bit. The industrial estate is a busy area, but there’s a sense of community among the different businesses here. We all know each other’s faces. Handwara is our home, and we’ve built this business bit by bit over the years. We deal with the earth, so things are naturally a bit messy. You’ll see dust on our boots and dirt under our fingernails most days. We don’t have any marketing people telling us how to speak; we just tell it like it is. When a truck comes in, we get to work loading it up, and when it’s quiet, we maintain the machinery or organize the piles of stone. It’s a physical life that keeps us strong and grounded. We appreciate the honest nature of working with the land’s resources. It’s not a glamorous business, but it’s ours, and we’ve been doing it right here on Plot No.90 for a long time without needing to change much.
