Our shop is right on Old Municipality Road, number 21/421. It’s an old part of Ilkal, so the roads are a bit narrow and it gets crowded during market days. We’ve been operating out of this same building for a long time. It’s got high ceilings and those old wooden doors that creak when you open them in the morning. A bit of everything that people in town might need for their daily work or house repairs is sold here. The shelves are packed pretty tight, and sometimes it takes a minute to find exactly where we tucked away a specific item. My father used to run things here, and now I’ve taken over, though he still sits on the bench outside some afternoons to watch the traffic. We know most of the people who walk through the door by their first names. It’s not a big corporate operation. We just open up at nine, sweep the front, and start the day. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to use flashlights to show customers the stock in the back corners. It can be a bit chaotic when three people want different things at once, but we manage. We don't have a website or anything like that. We just rely on being here every day and having what folks are looking for. It’s a quiet life, mostly, just keeping the shop going and making sure the inventory stays topped up. Even when the weather is bad, we try to stay open because people rely on us for small things.
