J L Vijapur Kirani Merchant is located at 82-4-7, Basaveshwara Circle in Kaulpet. We are right on the Main Road which is also College Road here in Bagalkot. It’s a very noisy spot. The students from the colleges walk past in large groups. They rarely buy much, maybe some chewing gum or a small snack. Most of our real work is with the local families who buy their monthly supplies. We have big open bags of grains and pulses. I spend a lot of time scooping them into paper bags. My fingers get dry from the grain dust. The Basaveshwara Circle is always jammed with traffic. You can hear the horns all day. The shop has been in this building for a long time. The ceilings are high but the corners have some cobwebs I can't reach even with a broom. We have a heavy wooden desk where I keep my accounts. It’s got a lot of ink stains on it from over the years. Bagalkot gets very hot in the summer, and the main road holds the heat long after sunset. We drink a lot of water from the clay pot in the corner. It stays cool there. Sometimes the old men from the neighborhood sit on the bench outside and talk for hours. I don't mind as long as they don't block the door. We aren't trying to be the biggest shop. We just want to get through the work.
