If you head down Sai Road in the Nalagarh area, you will find Vmt Spinning Company Ltd. It is a large building, and you can hear the hum of the spinning frames from quite a distance. Inside, it is a world of cotton and thread. There is lint everywhere, even if we clean it five times a day. The machines are old but they still run well if you take care of them. We work in shifts here, so the place never really sleeps. There is always someone walking the rows, checking the bobbins and making sure the yarn is coming out smooth. It is very loud, so we have to use hand signals sometimes to talk to each other over the noise of the motors. Nalagarh is a hub for this kind of industry, so we are surrounded by other mills and warehouses. The heat from the machines makes the air thick, especially during the humid months. We have a small canteen where everyone gathers for breaks. The tea there is strong and sweet, which helps when you are halfway through a long shift. We aren't doing anything fancy here, just turning raw material into yarn for the garment makers. Most of us have been working these machines for years and know exactly when a bearing is about to go just by the sound it makes. It is hard work, but there is a rhythm to it that feels right.
