New Handloom Co. Op. Socty Ltd.

In Purabagh, over in Mubarakpur, we have this handloom society set up. It’s called New Handloom Co. Op. Socty Ltd., but mostly people just know us by the sound of the looms. We are a group of weavers who decided to work together because it’s easier than trying to do it all alone. The building isn't much to look at, just some bricks and a tin roof that gets really loud when it rains. We have yarn everywhere in different colors, mostly just stacked up in the corners where it won't get tripped over. Some days the work goes fast and other days we spend more time fixing the threads than actually making anything. It’s not a big corporate thing, just local people from the neighborhood who know how to handle the fabric. We sit on the floor mostly while we work. My cousin handles the books, but he’s not an accountant or anything, he just writes things down in a big ledger. We don't have fancy lights or air conditioning, so in the summer we open all the windows and hope for a breeze. People come by to pick up bundles of cloth and we load them onto the back of rickshaws. It’s a bit of a mess sometimes, but we get the orders out eventually. That’s just how it is here in Mubarakpur and we've been doing it this way for a long time.
