Our place is called Thambi Illam and it sits right on 5th Street in Ayyanar Nagar. It is very easy to find because we are directly opposite the MIET Engineering College. You can see the students walking around all day which keeps the street very lively. We handle export and import stuff from this office. The building is a bit older, but it works well for what we need. We spend a lot of time on the phone talking to shipping agents or checking on where a particular container is located. There is always a lot of paperwork involved in this business, so the desks are usually covered in folders and stamps. Sometimes the college traffic makes it hard to park right in front, so we have to leave the bike a bit further down. We started this small business because we saw a gap in the local market for getting goods overseas. It is not always easy with the changing rules and customs, but we keep at it. Most of our day is spent making sure the documents are correct so nothing gets stuck at the port. We usually close up around six or seven in the evening unless there is an urgent shipment to track. It gets a bit noisy during the college breaks, but we are used to it by now. The tea shop nearby is where we spend most of our breaks when we need to step away from the desk.
