Cheran Hardwares. Down on 53 Cholambedu Road. Thirumullaivoyal is a place where everyone kind of knows where the shops are. I opened this hardware store because people always need something fixed. We have rows of shelves filled with things like nails, PVC pipes, and some basic tools. It gets a bit dusty in here because the door is always open to the street. You can hear the bikes going past all day long. Sometimes a plumber comes in looking for a specific washer, or a neighbor wants a new lock for their gate. I spend a lot of time searching through bins for small parts. I don't have a computer system to tell me where everything is; I just know. My hands are usually a bit dirty from handling metal and wire. It's not a big showroom, just a practical space where you get what you need for your house. I usually have the radio playing quietly in the back. When the rains come, the shop gets a bit damp, but that’s just how it is. People stop by to chat even if they aren't buying much. It’s just a regular neighborhood business. We don't do fancy advertising. If you need a hammer or some paint, you just walk down Cholambedu Road and look for the sign. We stay open until the sun goes down and then I lock up. It’s just how we run things here.
