Estuary Island

We are located down in Poovar, which is a quiet spot in Kerala. Our address is just Poovar P.O., which tells you a lot about how small the community is here. Being an estuary means we are surrounded by water, so everything we do is dictated by the environment. We have the sea on one side and the backwaters on the other. It’s a lot of work to maintain a place in this climate because the salt air and the humidity can be tough on the buildings and the plants. We spend most of our time outdoors, making sure the pathways are clear and the gardens are healthy. Most of the people working here are from the local village. We grew up around these waters. It’s not a fast-paced life like you’d find in a city. We have to use boats for a lot of things, which is just normal for us. We don't have a big office or a fancy corporate team. It’s just us, the local staff, keeping things running. We deal with the daily chores like fixing leaks or cleaning up after a storm. It’s a very hands-on job. We aren't trying to be anything we’re not. We just provide a place where the water and the land meet. It’s a simple, honest life here by the coast, and we just take it one day at a time.
