Bhawani Store

Our little shop, Bhawani Store, is located right in the middle of New Market in Ukhra. If you are coming from the Andal police station, it is just a short walk away in the Burdwan district. The store has been around for a long time and has stayed in the family. It is a small space, so we have to be clever about where we put everything. We stack boxes all the way up to the ceiling sometimes. It gets a bit messy, especially on Tuesdays when the new stock arrives and we have to sort through it all. We sell basic things like grains, soap, and other household items that people around here need every day. The shelves are made of old wood and they have seen better days, but they do the job. We do not have a fancy computer system to ring things up. We just use a paper notebook and a calculator. Sometimes when the power goes out in the evening, we have to use candles or torches to find what the customers are looking for. We know almost everyone who comes in by their name, and we usually stop to chat for a minute or two. It is not a high-speed business, just a local spot where neighbors come to shop. My cousin often helps me out behind the counter when the evening rush starts. We try to keep our prices fair because we know everyone in the community. It is just a simple, everyday store for regular people.
