Vijay Wood Industries

Vijay Wood Industries is situated at Plot No. 4901/1, right near Lyka Chowkdi. Being near the chowkdi means there is always a lot of traffic and people passing by. You can hear the motorcycles and the buses all day long. In the shop, there is always a layer of sawdust on everything, no matter how much we sweep. The smell of cut wood is actually quite nice, though it can get a bit dusty for the lungs. We work with all kinds of timber, mostly raw pieces that need to be sliced down to size. It’s heavy work, lifting the planks and moving them onto the saws. We have to be careful with our fingers. Most of us have been working with wood since we were young, so we know how it behaves. We don't have a computer in the front or a fancy billing system. Everything is mostly done with a pencil and a notebook. Sometimes the wood arrives wet if it’s been raining, and then we have to find space to let it dry out before we can do anything with it. The yard is usually full of scraps that we let people take for firewood. It’s a basic operation. We show up, we cut the wood, and we send it out to whoever ordered it. It’s not a complicated life, but it keeps us tired by the end of the day and that’s fine with us.
