Shree Khodiyar Ice Factory

We are located at Plot No. 234. It’s the ice factory. Inside, it’s a whole different world from the heat outside. We have these big tanks and the sound of the compressors is always going in the background. It’s a low hum that vibrates through the floor. We spend our days pulling heavy blocks of ice out and getting them ready for whoever needs them. The floor is always wet, so you have to watch your step or you’ll end up sliding across the room. We wear heavy boots and sometimes jackets even when it’s boiling hot out on the street. During the summer months, it gets really hectic here. Everyone wants ice at the same time and we can barely keep up with the freezing cycles. At Shree Khodiyar Ice Factory, we don't have much time for sitting around. When the ice is ready, it has to move. The machinery is old but it works well if you treat it right. Sometimes the power goes out and we all hold our breath hoping it comes back before things start to melt. It’s a simple business but it’s physical. Your hands get cold and your back gets tired from the lifting. We just focus on keeping the water clean and the blocks solid. That’s what we do here at Plot No. 234, day in and day out. Usually, we take a short break in the evening when the trucks have all left.
