Golden Ice Factory

Golden Ice Factory is situated at Plot No. 1711, which is quite close to Crystal Chowkdi. If you are in the area, you probably know the spot. Making ice is a strange business because it’s always freezing inside while the sun is beating down on the roof outside. We have these large tanks and the cooling systems that run pretty much twenty-four hours a day. The sound of the machinery is constant, a low thrumming that you eventually stop hearing after you’ve worked here for a month. Water is everywhere, so we all wear rubber boots to keep our feet dry while we move the heavy blocks around. It’s hard work on the back, sliding those big slabs onto the trucks, but we have some good guys who have the technique down. The blocks are clear and cold, and we stack them up in the storage room until the local vendors come to pick them up in their small tempos. Sometimes the ice picks get misplaced or a pipe starts leaking, and we have to drop everything to fix it. It’s not the kind of place where you wear a suit. We are usually in old clothes and jackets because of the temperature change. People know us near the chowkdi and they just drop in when they need a supply for their shops or events. It’s simple, cold, and keeps us moving through the long shifts.
