Making ice is a cold business in a very hot place. We’re located at Plot No. C-1-1030-36, right near the Little Hut Chokdi, which is a landmark everyone around here knows. If you tell someone you’re near the Chokdi, they can find you without a map. Our days start extremely early, often before the sun is even up, because that’s when the trucks want to load the blocks. The floor is almost always wet and there’s a lot of mist in the air from the freezing process. It’s a strange feeling to step out of the cold rooms into the Gujarat heat. We’ve got several plots combined here to give us enough space for the freezing tanks and the loading docks. It’s a lot of physical work, moving the heavy blocks and making sure the machinery stays at the right temperature. We don't have a fancy lobby or a coffee machine for guests. If you come by, you’ll probably find us in rubber boots and heavy jackets. We’ve been part of this GIDC area for a long time, and we’ve seen businesses come and go. We just keep our heads down and keep the water freezing. The machines hum all night long, and someone is usually here 24/7 to keep an eye on things. It’s a simple, honest way to make a living and it keeps us busy year round regardless of the season.
