Suri Modern Rice Mill

The mill is out at Pl.No. 2/968-5/A in Jayanagar Colony. Being in Anantapur District, it gets really hot in the afternoons. The machines at Suri Modern Rice Mill make a lot of noise when they are running full speed. You can hear it from the road. We spend our days checking the hullers and making sure the grain flows right. It’s a dusty job. Your clothes are usually covered in husks by noon. Jayanagar Colony is a quiet place except for us. We have a big yard for the trucks to turn around. Sometimes the power goes out and everything stops, so we just sit in the shade and wait. It gives us a chance to drink some tea. The mill has been part of our lives for a long time. We don't have fancy signs or anything. People just know the address. We deal with the farmers who bring their harvest in. Every season is different depending on the rain. This year has been okay. We just keep the parts greased and the floors swept as much as we can. It’s hard work but it’s what we know. The walls are made of stone and keep some of the heat out. We just keep going until the last bag is filled.
