You can find us on Rai Ram Saran Dass Street, which is just inside the Hall Gate. This part of the city is very old and the streets are quite narrow, so getting a large vehicle in here is always a bit of a headache. We’ve been in this spot for a long time now. The building is old too, with those high ceilings and thick walls that stay cold in the winter. Virdi Brothers is basically just us family members and a couple of helpers who have been with us forever. We don’t do any fancy advertising or anything like that; people usually just know where we are by word of mouth. The street outside is always crowded with shoppers and rickshaws, so there’s a lot of shouting and horns honking all day long. We keep our door open to let in some light, but it also lets in all the dust from the street. Inside, it’s a bit of a jumble of papers and old parts, but we know where everything is. We take our time with the work because rushing usually leads to mistakes. Most days we close up for a bit in the afternoon to have a proper meal. It’s a traditional way of doing things, but it’s how it’s always been done here inside Hall Gate.
