Karamjit Singh Architect

Karamjit Singh works within the Department of Architecture at Guru Nanak Dev University. Being an Associate Professor means the work is a mix of teaching and practicing architecture. The office is tucked away in the department building. It’s a place filled with books, old student projects, and lots of papers. You can hear the sounds of the university outside—bells ringing and students talking in the hallways. It’s a bit of a different pace than a commercial firm. There’s a lot of thinking and discussing why we build things the way we do. Most of the time is spent either in the classroom or at the desk working on specific architectural plans. We deal with a lot of technical drawings and trying to keep up with new ways of doing things. It’s not a fancy office by any means. It’s a functional space where work gets done. Sometimes it feels like there isn't enough room for all the files and models we accumulate. The windows look out onto the campus greenery, which is a nice break from looking at blue-line prints all day. We spend a lot of time on the computer too, just like any other modern architect. It’s a long process to go from an idea to a finished building plan. We just take it one step at a time, making sure the measurements are right and the structure makes sense for what it's supposed to be. That's the main focus every day.
