In Parvati Nagar, things are usually a bit quieter than the main markets, but our sewing machines make plenty of noise throughout the day. We make bags of all kinds here. There are rolls of fabric stacked in the corners and thread scattered around the floor. We aren't a big factory with hundreds of workers. It is just a few of us sitting at the machines, guiding the needles through heavy canvas or nylon. Sometimes we make school bags for the kids, other times it is those simple shopping bags people use for vegetables at the local market. The patterns are cut on a big wooden table that has seen better days. We don't have a website or a marketing team. People usually find us because they live nearby or someone told them we do decent work. My back usually aches by the end of the day from leaning over the machine for so long. We try to keep the zippers moving smoothly and the handles strong so they don't rip when the bag is full. It is simple work, but it requires a lot of attention so you don't sew your finger. The sunlight comes in through the front door and hits the dust in the air. We keep a tally of how many pieces we finish in a notebook on the shelf. It is just a local shop making things that people actually use every day to carry their stuff.
